Mayfly emerger patterns, yellow sally, and caddis patterns seem to work well and dry flies work best in the evening.

Yellowstone offers yet another opportunity for fantastic Montana fly fishing. With over 800 miles of broad rivers, as well as backcountry streams, there are plenty of fish to be caught. Before doing any Montana fly fishing here though, make sure you do your homework. There are park regulations designed to protect the fish such as opening and closing dates, restrictive use of bait, catch and release only areas, and limits according to species.

When planning your Montana fly fishing adventure, be sure to also include the Gallatin River. Besides great fishing, this area offers some of the most scenic views in the country. This river provides 120 miles of trout water and is divided into an upper, middle, and lower section. Among these sections you can see lush meadows, forested canyons, and broad valleys. You have a good chance of catching fish on this river since the trout population is around 4,000 per mile of river. The average fish caught here while fly fishing are 12 - 14 inches in length.
