Selecting the Right Fly Fishing Reels for Your Needs

There are hundreds of different ways to evaluate fly fishing reels. Some folks like nice light reels, so their rod can soar swiftly back and forth. Others enjoy reels that are going to be able to handle all of the action that their rod is going to be seeing. No matter what you prefer, there are a few things you should know about fly fishing reels before purchasing one.

The drag system on fly fishing reels is perhaps the most important feature. There are two different systems available on reels. The first is the traditional Spring and Pawl drag. These are ideal for reels used for trout fishing. The line is pulled out very smoothly, without any jerking. However, this system of fly fishing reels does not work well for larger fish.

The Disc Drag is another system for fly fishing reels. This newer system uses materials that act like a brake on the line. These reels exert a smooth but hard pressure on the line. They are excellent for large fish. These reels can sometimes be more uneven than a Spring and Pawl system, but this is not usually a problem.

Before purchasing any fly fishing reels, you should consider quality. You want your fishing reels to last for many years. Fishing reels have moving parts inside them, so if you purchase a poor quality model, it will wear out much quicker. Also, consider corrosion, especially if you are fishing in salt water. You want fly fishing reels that have paint that will not wear off and lead to rust spots.

Another consideration with fly fishing reels is the type of rod you have. You want your fishing reels to work well with your rods. For example, if you have a four weight rod, you want a reel for a four weight rod. You would also want four weight fly line. Everything needs to work together as a system.

A last consideration is the ease of use of fly fishing reels. You want reels that are easy to switch between hands to retrieve. If you use several types of fly lines, then you also want fly fishing reels that are easy to add an extra spool. It is helpful to buy spools at the time you buy your fly fishing reels. If you wait until later, they may not be available anymore.

There are many different choices and features to consider when purchasing fly fishing reels. Take your time and do your research and you are sure enjoy your fly fishing reels for years to come!
